Our Care & Community Placements in Mongolia

Projects Abroad send volunteers to roughly twenty different orphanages in Ulaanbartar, the capital of Mongolia. Some orphanages are large and house up to 120 children, while the smaller ones house only 15.

Many of these placements are located in very poor areas, usually in the middle of tented 'Ger districts'. A lot of the work involves playing with the children who range in age from babies to teenagers. Volunteers work alongside committed local staff to provide practical help and friendship to the many children who are in need of support.

Volunteers are asked to work from early morning until mid-afternoon with the orphans. In the morning, volunteers help to clothe and feed the children. They then play with them until lunch-time when it is important to ensure that all the children have washed well before eating. Volunteers often help with homework and give basic English lessons to the older children.

The thing all the care placements have in common is that they are designed to help children who have precious few other people to whom they can turn. This work can be challenging, but it is also fun and enjoyable, and greatly appreciated by the children and staff. Probably the greatest value of a volunteer is to bring some fun into the lives of these children. Simply by being there, playing games, showing affection and providing some much needed love and attention you will be making an important contribution.
